Recreational cannabis sale and use could become legal in Canada in 2018. If legalized, each province will be responsible for setting some of its own guidelines and legislation.
Some decisions, however, will be left up to local governments, including:
- Where cannabis retail stores can be located
- Business licensing
- Policies and bylaws on smoking and vaping
Before decisions are made, the Municipality of Jasper and Parks Canada conducted a survey (which closed on Friday, June 8).
The results of this survey will be presented to Council in late June, and will be taken into consideration by the Municipality of Jasper and Parks Canada as decisions on local bylaws and regulations are developed.
Jasper is a national park community and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As such, it is not only home to residents -- it is also a destination for visitors from across Canada and around the world. This unique environment will be taken into account as the Municipality of Jasper and Parks Canada regulate cannabis sale, smoking and vaping in the community and the national park.
