Summer Fire Pit Safety
It’s backyard fire pit season again, and with it come a few reminders for safe enjoyment.
According to Municipality of Jasper Bylaw #85, outdoor fire pits must be a minimum of 2 meters from buildings, decks or other combustible material. The fire pit must be constructed of bricks, concrete blocks, heavy gauge metal or other non-combustible materials.
To conform to Municipal bylaws, fire pit users must…
- Burn only clean-burning dry wood, charcoal, or briquettes.
- Avoid burning garbage, yard waste, plastic, painted or treated wood.
- Use kindling and build up the fire slowly for a controllable fire. Lighter fluid is an unpredictable and dangerous method to start a fire.
- Use common sense and courtesy. Note where the wind is taking the smoke — if it’s right to the neighbour’s house, perhaps don’t have a fire that day.
- Remember to respect neighbours and keep the noise level down at night.
- Keep chairs and other furniture at least three feet away from fire pits. It only takes a few seconds and a spark or flame to start a fire.
- Keep a good water source close by.
- Enjoy.
