Sister City

The objective of establishing a sister relationship with another city is to promote friendship, education and tourism.

Jasper, Canada and Hakone, Japan have been sister cities since July 4, 1972. Hakone and Jasper have many similarities: both are located in national parks with similar topography and have tourism-based economies.

The relationship strengthens economic and community development and provides opportunities for municipal officials, students and citizens to explore another culture through a long-term community partnership.
Hakone, population 14,544, is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, 80 km west of Tokyo. Famous for hot springs, outdoor activities, natural beauty and the view of nearby Mt. Fuji, Hakone is one of the most popular destinations among Japanese and international tourists. The city attracts 20 million tourists per year. Hakone has been one of Japan's most popular hot spring resorts for centuries. Today, more than a dozen springs provide hot spring water to the many bath houses and ryokan (Japanese style inns) in the Hakone region.
