Distinguished Service Award Nomination
Richard Ireland, Mayor of Jasper
While 2021 marks Richard Ireland’s 20th anniversary as Mayor of the Municipality of Jasper, his legacy of public service as Jasper’s Chief Elected Official goes back to 1989, when he was first elected as Chairman of the Jasper Town Committee. Over the course of four terms as Chairman, Mr. Ireland was the chief community representative and spokesman in local government negotiations with the Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta.
Since municipal incorporation in 2001, Mayor Ireland has been serving as the Chief Elected Official of the Municipality of Jasper, where he has applied his skills and knowledge to the development of open, honest and accountable local government for the residents of Jasper. His remarkable strength of character, kindness and open mind have supported him in becoming, and remaining, a relevant and effective leader for Jasper residents. His steady, progressive and collaborative leadership style has guided the development of our municipal organization through the establishment of a brand new governing body in a highly complex environment as a national park, tourism-based community.
Over the years, Mayor Ireland has supported and mentored multiple local elected officials who shared his passion for public service, and were often compelled to run for municipal office to work with and learn from him. Mayor Ireland excels at ensuring all aspects of a decision are considered, and that all councillors have had an opportunity to share their views before a vote takes place at the Council table, all while presenting the “big picture” as he sees it and building consensus towards reaching the best outcomes for the community. Mayor Ireland’s integrity and genuinely selfless dedication to serving others continue to inspire municipal leaders, political and administrative, past and present.
We cannot think of anyone more deserving of this Distinguished Service Award than Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland.
